The Catholic Church of Saint Peter & Paul dates from the 11th century and is located close to the FC Winterthur stadium. Those who installed the first church bells calling people to worship, couldn’t have envisaged that some 500 years later FC Winterthur – their new noisy neighbours – would enter the field to the sound of AC/DC’s Hell’s Bells!
Looking up: A tower of FC Winterthur beer cups creates completion for the 28 floor Sulzer- Hochhaus tower (also known as the Wintower) which overlooks the FC Winterthur stadium.
Looking down: I took this photo from the top of the Sulzer-Hochhaus tower which shows the FC Winterthur stadium nestling in the streets of the town. The official name of the stadium is the “Schützenwiese“, however it’s referred to as the “Schützi“ in the local dialect.
From the top of the tower: Between playing games of table-football on the 28th floor, you can look at on the mountains of the Alpstein region, which is part of the Pre-Alps. The mountain shown is the Säntis – which is the highest mountain in the Ostschweiz (Eastern Switzerland).
A Swiss football quiz question: Which team has the same stadium capacity as its Zip Code? The answer is FC Winterthur… which has a ground capacity of 8400, and a city post code of 8400. The current capacity seems to have increased to 8550 which must confuse the Swiss postal service
As demonstrated by the array of shirts in one of the stadium bars, FC Winterthur has welcomed some famous visitors the club since it was established in 1896. The team’s famous Rot-Weiss colours can also be seen away from the Schützi and on the city streets.
